On September 20th, Hurricane Fiona caused devastating damage to many across the Dominican. Fortunately, the school was not too badly affected, but there was damage to an awning in the playground and the staff rest area on the roof was ripped apart. To make matters worse, the Ministry of Education reversed their previous decision to let the school rebuild the staff rest area on the fenced flat roof. This would be more costly and take away much needed play space for the children.
In order to restore the damage and keep the playground area, Gabi and a friend cleared the land purchased for the community centre with machetes. Donations were also received from supporters, but it was not enough to cover the total cost. As a result, the school had to use their general funds, leaving a deficit. Any help to restore the deficit would be greatly appreciated so that the school can continue running in 2023.
